The building we live at is over 150 years old, it was originally built as a Coach House and Stables for a pub called the ‘Old Dragoon Inn’. It was converted into a shop and three dwellings in 1904, this is when the Dragoon Hotel was built which is now called The Ladybird Inn. The shop and dwellings were demolished in 1965 to build the Banners shop and butchery. Our restaurant building was used throughout the vast majority of the twentieth century by a family called the Pancheri’s who were wood and stone carvers until the 1990s. Many examples of the work produced in our building can be seen in numerous churches and stately homes across Great Britain. In the early years of the war, following the bombing of the Houses of Parliament, a commission was received to make and carve a new speaker’s chair for the House of Commons, also at this time the premises was obliged by the Government to make ammunition boxes for the Army. Following the Pancheri families exit, the building was then used as storage and often rented for local businesses until 2014. This is where the Banner family decided to identify a use for the building and use the existing businesses they owned to open Banners Café & Restaurant in December 2014. We are grateful to Michael Ford for much of the above information. Michael worked with Mr Pancheri (Senior and Junior) for around fifty years.
